Spring Homeowner To-Do List
Days are getting longer, temperatures are on the rise, birds are chirping and tulips are blooming. It’s spring — one of our favourite times of the year. For homeowners, it’s a season of tackling home maintenance tasks and keeping things running smoothly. If you’re wondering what maintenance tasks to start on, you’ve come to the right place. Use this to-do list as a guide to get you started on spring maintenance around your home.
1. Scope out the basement for leaks. With snow thawing and rain on its way, take some time to check your basement for unwanted cracks and moisture that may have entered through cracks in the foundation. Contact a professional to ha
2. Clean out the eavestroughs and downspouts. Spring is the perfect time to clean out the eavestroughs and downspouts to keep them clear and to let water flow through. Contact a professional handyman if you’d like some assistance with this spring maintenance task.
3. Get the air conditioning serviced. It’s recommended to have your air conditioner serviced once a year. Before the temperatures rise, it’s best to call an air conditioning technician to have the AC inspected and serviced for the season.
4. Make deck repairs. Head outside and walk around your deck. Pay close attention to check for any missing nails, screws or general wear and tear. Make repairs as needed before summer is in full swing.
5. Take a look for cracks on the driveway or walkways. Changes in the weather may cause damage to your driveway, walkway or patio stones. Check the condition of your driveway or walkway and pay attention to cracks that may have occurred throughout the winter. If there are cracks, purchase a concrete repair kit from your local hardware store and follow the package directions for best results.
6. Change the smoke alarm batteries. The Government of Canada recommends checking smoke alarms monthly and changing the batteries every six months. Follow the instructions for your model of smoke alarm for routine maintenance and testing.
7. Turn on the exterior water supply. Once temperatures consistently stay above freezing, turn your exterior water valve on for the summer and run your outdoor taps to ensure everything is running well.
8. Service the lawnmower. Before using your lawnmower this season, clean the air filter, top up the oil and replace the fuel. A local small engine mechanic can help maintain your lawnmower for the spring.
9. Do a walk around and check the foundation. Take a walk around the exterior of your home to inspect the condition of the foundation, paying close attention to any cracks or damages that may have occurred throughout the winter. If something doesn’t look right, contact a professional contractor to have repairs completed.
10. Take a peek at fences for damage. While you’re outside, check any fences on your property for missing screws, nails, planks or general wear that may need to be repaired, making upgrades as needed.
11. Check the roof for missing shingles or damage. Take a close look at your house from a distance and check the roof for damaged, missing or aged shingles. If you notice issues, contact a professional roofer to have maintenance done on your roof.
Once you complete the spring maintenance tasks that apply to your home, you’ll be all set for a successful spring season.
