It’s one of our favourite times of the year – time to head to the cottage! Filled with memories and adventure, going to the cottage is an unforgettable experience that many Ontarians look forward to all year. Whether you like to splash in the water all day or if you prefer to sit in the shade and catch up on some reading, here are a few basics to pack when you head north to the cottage this summer.

Sunglasses, Sunscreen and Bug Spray: Play it safe this summer. When you’re packing for the cottage, remember to bring sunglasses and full bottles of sunscreen and bug spray. It’s a good idea to apply a layer of sunscreen before you hop in the car to head North – you might start to get a tan on the drive up North!

Towels and Extra Linens: Planning on spending time in the water? Better pack a towel or two! It’s a good idea to pack a few extras in case you head down to the beach more than once a day. Consider packing extra linens as well to keep bedding fresh and clean.

Comfortable Footwear: Whether you’re planning on going for a hike or staying close to the cottage, comfortable footwear is a must have. Consider bringing an extra pair, if you have room. You never know where you’ll end up adventuring to. If your cottage is in the Georgian Bay area, there are plenty of scenic trails to explore, and wearing proper footwear is key to a fun adventure.

Groceries: Bring all your favourites! In addition to your regular grocery shopping, it’s ideal to do a separate trip to pick up groceries to bring to the cottage. Make a plan of what you’d like to eat for the duration that you’re there and head out to purchase all the ingredients. Don’t forget about snacks for the car ride to the cottage!

Car Games and Activities: If you’re heading to the cottage with kids, bring some fun activities to do on the car ride to the cottage. Colouring books, tablets and books help time pass quickly. Something as simple as playing 20 questions can help keep kids entertained for the car ride North.

Pet Supplies: Heading to the cottage with a pet? Remember to pack pet food, dishes, toys and a water bowl. Depending on how long your drive to the cottage is, it’s a good idea to stop part way and let your furry friends get some fresh air and stretch. You’ll enjoy the break from driving, too!

Kitchen Tools: Depending on how much you keep at your cottage, you may need to pack kitchen tools or supplies. Take a look at what you have on your meal plan for the week and pack up any kitchen tools that you may need to bring from your house that you don’t already have at the cottage.

Clothing: Last but not least, clothes! Summer weather can be unpredictable, but it’s almost always guaranteed to be hot. Pack an assortment of t-shirts, shorts, bathing suits, and capris. It’s a good idea to pack a pair of jeans and a hoodie for those cooler evenings spent watching the sunset or around a campfire.

You’re all set for a successful trip to the cottage! We’re looking forward to seeing you in cottage country.
