From dining room tables to second bedrooms where we work looks a bit different than it used to for many locals. While working from home may not be something we were accustomed to, this new normal is filled with opportunity. Creating a space designated for work is an important part of staying on task while working at home. The five steps in this article have been designed to help you create, or improve, your home office space with comfort and productivity in mind.

Step 1: Choose a Quiet, Bright Location

Find a quiet place to set up, where distracting sounds are limited. A den, an extra bedroom or a space in the basement are a few places that work well. If it seems too quiet, streaming music or listening to a podcast may be helpful. It’s also ideal for the space to be well lit. Working near a window allows for plenty of natural light and fresh air, while lamps are a perfect addition to add light.

Step 2: Minimize Clutter

Sometimes less is more. In a room with less clutter and distractions, it’s typically easier to be more productive. Take a look around your office space and determine what extra items are cluttering up space. Consider tucking these items away or moving them to another room. Regularly decluttering your workspace could also help you stay focused and potentially increase your productivity. Depending on how quickly your workspace fills up, you may want to declutter once a week or at the end of each month.

Step 3: Maximize Organization

Create an organization system that works best for you. Whether you’re working from home in the short or long term, staying organized will help you maintain your regular workflow and timelines. If you’re able, transitioning to digital documentation methods is a simple way to keep files organized. You may also want to consider grabbing a calendar, sticky notes, paper clips, a small garbage can and a small filing cabinet.

Step 4: Make the Space Yours

You’ll likely be spending a lot of time in your home office space. Make the space somewhere you want to work. What motivates you? Use this as inspiration for adding personal touches to the room. You may consider adding wall art, personal photos, a house plant, an inspirational quote or maybe even a fresh coat of paint. The décor possibilities are endless!

Step 5: Invest in Office Furniture

If you’re working from home long term, you may want to think about upgrading to an ergonomic chair or a standing desk. Ergonomic chairs are adjustable to suit your size while helping to maintain your posture, ultimately improving your comfort and ability to stay productive. Standing desks are widely available online and in-office stores in a variety of sizes, colours and designs. Added bonus: they adjust to regular height for when your legs could use a break.
