10 Tips for Moving Week
The end of the month is filled with new beginnings for many Buyers and Sellers in our area. With boxes and tape flying off shelves, and furniture being loaded into trucks, plenty of homeowners are excited to settle into their new neighbourhoods. Whether you’re looking to buy or sell, these tips have been designed to help you through your next move.
1. Make a Moving Week Plan
Write a list of tasks that need to be done before you move and divide them up over the week based on priority and timing. Start with moving day and work backwards. Ask for help from family and friends or ask your Agent for guidance.
2. Stock up on Boxes
If you haven’t already, head to a local hardware store and stock up on a range of different size boxes. Small boxes are great for heavy items, while larger boxes can hold plenty of small, lighter items. Go for quality to keep your belongings safe and secure.
3. Grab an Extra Roll of Labels
Labels will become your new best friend. Colour coding each box by room will help keep belongings organized during the move. You may also want to keep an inventory sheet of what is in each box. This way, you’ll have a good idea of where everything is.
4. Pack Breakables Safely
Use pillows and blankets as added protection in boxes that have breakable items. Keep boxes with delicates safely packed on top of heavier boxes. Adding a “fragile” label to boxes with breakables will let your movers know to be extra careful.
5. Watch the Clock
Time will fly by the week leading up to moving day. Declutter in advance and plan to have enough time for last-minute packing, organizing and unexpected tasks. On moving day, keeping an eye on the clock to stay on track.
6. Keep the Essentials Close
Consider who you’re moving with and what their most important needs are. Do you have children, pets or in-laws living with you? Set aside a large tote for essential items such as important paperwork, water bottles, cell phone chargers, toiletries, cleaning supplies and any other items that are most important to you and your family.
7. Pack Food Last
During the weeks leading up to moving day, cleaning out the cupboards and minimizing food shopping is recommended. The fewer perishable items you have on hand to bring to your new home, the better. Use a cooler and freezer packs to transition any remaining food to your new home and discard anything that spoils.
8. Stay Hydrated
While moving day can seem a bit hectic for everyone involved, staying hydrated may not be top of mind. Keep reusable water bottles close by for you and your family members. Picking up a case of recyclable water bottles for your movers is also a thoughtful gesture.
9. Do a Final Walkthrough
Once you’re all packed up and almost on your way, do a final walkthrough and double-check that you have all of your belongings. Take a peek inside cupboards, drawers and closets before you leave.
